Broadway retail project moves forward

A joint board for Rutgers University-Camden and Rowan University has advanced plans for a new shopping area on a downtown block of Broadway.

The proposed strip center at Broadway and Clinton Street is intended to complement a health sciences campus being developed nearby, according to Kris Kolluri, chief executive officer for the schools’ Joint Board of Governors.

Board members authorized the purchase of almost four acres of vacant land for stores that would rise on the eastern side of Broadway. Separately, the board approved the acquisition of a building that holds a methadone clinic at 5th and Market streets.

“The goal is to lease the land to the (Camden County Improvement Authority) for $1 so that a retail center can be built,” Kolluri said.
