Cape May County to introduce emergency alert system

Cape May County will implement a countywide emergency alert system that will be used in advance of major storms.

The new system, called codeRed Alert, allows the county to call all landline phones in Cape May County and all cellphones that register for the alerts. The alert will come in as a prerecorded message from the county’s Office of Emergency Management.

Anyone can register for the alerts free of charge by visiting the county’s official website and clicking on the “Emergency Management” tab in the left margin.

The county hopes to have the alert system up and running within the next two weeks.

“This countywide alert system is the first of its kind available at no charge to our residents, property owners and visitors,” Cape May County Freeholder Gerald Thornton said. “This will allow the county OEM to provide emergency alerts and notices in advance of, and during major storms, and during other non-weather-related emergencies that may occur.”
