Cumberland County makes bid for Amazon HQ2

A proposal landing today at Amazon says Millville Municipal Airport’s location, capacity, and access to land make it a perfect site for research and development work, transportation needs, and other auxiliary programs that would help the company secure its future.

The Cumberland County Improvement Authority outlines the specific advantages in its proposal: Cumberland County is 45 minutes travel time from Philadelphia, Wilmington, Del.; and Atlantic City. Outdoors recreation and tourism opportunities are abundant and as close as the Maurice River. The airport is “in the heart of the Delaware Valley between Philadelphia and Atlantic City.” The cost of living is lower than surrounding areas. The New Jersey Motorsports Park is located on 500 adjacent acres. Rowan University is a 20-minute drive from Millville. The airport has a Federal Trade Zone that exempts commodities going to or coming from outside the country fees and other duties.

Amazon had set Oct. 19 as its deadline for submissions from communities interested in becoming the host of what it calls HQ2 for the online commerce and computing company. Newark and Camden County, among others in New Jersey, also have submitted proposals.
