Final approvals in to demolish Centerton Road Bridge

The historic span has sat unused for more than two years. Recently, though, Burlington County officials received final approvals to tear down the 114-year-old Centerton Road Bridge, which was shut down in April of 2015.

The bridge, closed to traffic in April 2015 after being declared “structurally deficient,” connects Mount Laurel to Willingboro and Westampton.

“We now have recently finalized all of the necessary approvals to demolish the bridge,” county spokesperson Eric Arpert said. “We still have to go out to bid for that work. We anticipate the demolition taking up to five months and we would anticipate going out in the coming months for that work.

In May of 2016, the county approved a $261,000 contract with Maser Consulting of Trenton for the feasibility study on a possible replacement.

Arpert said the final draft of the study is expected by the end of the year, and will hone in on exactly what would be required to replace the bridge – everything from easements that need to be in place and natural resources that have to be considered when dealing with a waterway. The study also identifies permits, approvals, land acquisitions and other things associated with what it would take to build a new bridge.
