The two-year budget deal signed by President Donald Trump will mean a big bonus to one of New Jersey’s best-known hospitals.
The agreement will mean millions of dollars in additional Medicare funds for Deborah Heart and Lung Center.
The legislation includes a provision making the Browns Mills hospital eligible for Medicare funding that otherwise goes only to hospitals in rural areas. No part of New Jersey is considered rural under federal rules.
“The additional payments, which we believe Deborah was always entitled to, will help Deborah continue to be one of the nation’s leaders in cardiovascular care,” said Joseph Chirichella, the hospital’s president and chief executive.
New Jersey is one of only three states classified as all-urban, meaning that its hospitals otherwise would not qualify for the extra funding even if they serve rural populations. The others are Delaware and Rhode Island.
