Local company’s 820-metric-ton boat lift could boost Cumberland town’s economy

A hulking apparatus recently assembled on the banks of the Maurice River could spur economic development in this large, rural township.

Yank Marine, a shipbuilding and repair company, unveiled a $3.5 million boat lift Monday capable of hauling ships weighing as much as 820 metric tons.

Previously, Yank Marine had a 50-ton lift at its yard in the Dorchester section of the township. Their original boatyard, in Upper Township, has a 300-ton hoist, but the nearby Garden State Parkway bridge and water depth at that location limit the size of ships they can work on, Bette Jean Yank said.

Now that the new lift is up and running, Yank said she is looking to hire marine electricians, welders, painters and other skilled workers to handle the anticipated increase in capacity.
