Fifteen years ago, Camden County officials announced controversial plans to demolish a rundown shopping center and replace it with a $65 million ice hockey arena and convention center.
But although the Pennsauken Mart fell in 2007, the county’s plans collapsed, too.
The site’s slumber is expected to end Wednesday, when a Willingboro firm will host a long-awaited groundbreaking ceremony.
Delco Development LLC plans to build a 504-unit apartment complex called Haddon Point at the intersection of Route 73, Route 130 and Haddonfield Road.
The project initially will have 204 apartments, with 264 more to come in a second phase, according to information provided last year to Pennsauken’s planning board.
Delco, which initially proposed 614 homes, has said it will also devote part of the site to “general commercial use.”
