New funds key to Salem hospital’s future, lawmakers say

Millions of dollars held by a local foundation need to be made available to ensure any new owner of The Memorial Hospital of Salem County can successfully operate the facility, state lawmakers say.

Third District lawmakers Senate President Stephen Sweeney and Assemblymen John Burzichelli and Adam Taliaferro have scheduled a briefing for Tuesday to publicly call for the Health and Wellness Foundation to use its money to help support a purchase of Memorial Hospital.

They say “the long-term viability of the hospital requires the return of the funds.”

Inspira Health Network is one entity that has “serious” interest in purchasing Memorial Hospital, according to one person with knowledge of plans involving the hospital’s future.
