Rutgers board approves plan to raze Campbell’s Field, redevelop site

Campbell’s Field struck out for the final time Thursday as the Rutgers University Board of Governors approved a resolution to raze the former home of the Camden Riversharks minor league baseball team to make way for new athletic facilities.

The field, now owned by the Camden County Improvement Authority and vacant since the Riversharks left in 2015, will be demolished as predicted in early November by South Jersey political power hitter George Norcross. In its place, Rutgers-Camden will redevelop the site as a multi-use athletic facility with baseball, lacrosse and soccer/field hockey fields. Spectator seating, locker rooms and restrooms will also be added, according to the resolution, which passed unanimously Thursday at the board’s meeting in Camden.

Rutgers will dedicate $7.5 million toward the project and maintain the facilities. The City of Camden, which will ask its finance board for $7.5 million and then seek to recoup that money in Green Acres funding from the state, will own the site.
