The first phase of planned affordable housing – a piece of the long-envisioned Bordentown Waterfront Community development – is underway.
A 70-unit senior housing complex will be built by Volunteers of America on seven acres on Burlington Road. Crews broke ground last week, and the project is expected to be completed this time next year, according to a representative for Volunteers of America.
One-bedroom units with high-efficiency appliances and fixtures, laundry facilities and community rooms will be available to seniors who earn up to 60 percent of the area median income, according to the nonprofit’s website. Five units will be set aside for homeless veterans.
A second phase of Volunteers of America’s development will include a 66-unit affordable housing project to be built between the Delaware River and the Quick Chek store off Route 130, according to Theokas. The units will be for low- and moderate-income families.
