The mayor of Wildwood wants the city to spend $20 million to repair and upgrade a 15-block section of the shore town’s famed boardwalk.
Mayor Ernie Troiano said the stretch of boardwalk from north of the Wildwoods Convention Center to Lincoln Avenue and from Oak Avenue to 26th Avenue is in “deplorable” condition,” according to PressofAtlanticCity.com.
Troiano said the boardwalk should be rebuilt with hardwood from Brazilian rain forests even though environmentalists will likely object.
The boards on that stretch have been in place since 1926, though the surface planking has been replaced with yellow pine a few times.
The mayor said it curls in hot weather and has become a hazard with people falling.
If the city approves a new boardwalk it would pay for it with bonds, grants and low-interest loans.
