Zoning change would allow Toms River hotel

A proposal to change the zoning on a piece of Oak Avenue land to allow a 112-room hotel and restaurant is headed back to the Planning Board after the Township Council chose not to vote on the zone change Tuesday.

Livingston-based The Briad Group has requested the zoning change to allow development of the four-story hotel, according to Robert C. Shea, the group’s Toms River lawyer.

Zoning changes must be approved by the Planning Board before heading to the Township Council, which has to adopt an ordinance allowing the change.

The tract of land is located across from the TGIFriday’s and Olive Garden restaurants, near the intersection of Oak and Hooper avenues. The site is currently zoned O-10, which permits childcare facilities, banks, adult care centers and schools. Hotels are not allowed.
