The Glassboro-Camden Line: A New Era of Transportation for South Jersey

The Glassboro-Camden Line (GCL) is one of the most significant infrastructure projects currently underway in South Jersey, set to transform the region’s transportation landscape. This 18-mile light rail line, which will connect Glassboro to Camden through existing rail lines, has been a long-awaited project aimed at improving regional mobility, reducing traffic congestion, and promoting sustainable development.


The Southern New Jersey Development Council (SNJDC) has been a pivotal player in advocating for and supporting the GCL project. For years, the Council has championed the GCL project as a critical component of South Jersey’s transportation network. By providing a reliable, efficient transit option, the GCL is expected to alleviate traffic congestion, reduce travel times, and stimulate economic development along its route.


The concept for the Glassboro-Camden Line dates back over two decades, rooted in the need for an economical public transit system to connect the growing communities of South Jersey with the broader Philadelphia metropolitan area. The GCL aims to provide a modern, high-capacity transit option that will serve as a catalyst for regional development and urban revitalization along its route.


The Manufacturing Process


Developing the Glassboro-Camden Line is a complex, multi-faceted project that requires meticulous planning and coordination across various sectors. The project team is evaluating the latest and alternative technologies and working with vehicle suppliers as part of the preliminary design phase. Some technologies under consideration include self-powered, zero emission, and biofuel vehicles.  Multiple Unit trains, or MU’s are also being explored.


The type of train selected will need to be capable of operating in the existing mixed-use rail corridor. Trains will also need to be at-grade, having low-floor cars to allow for level boarding and ADA accessibility. The trains will run in two-car sets that can hold up to 300 passengers. The trains will be designed with the capability of adding a third car as ridership demand increases. Stations will also accordingly be designed to span three-car sets.


While station design is not yet complete at this point in the preliminary engineering design phase, every GCL station will be ADA accessible. Stations will have either center platform boarding or side platform boarding. Stations with center platforms will have tracks on both sides, while side stations will have dual-center tracks between platforms running opposite routes. Commuters can transfer between sides without leaving the platform.


Promoting Economic and Environmental Benefits


By providing a reliable alternative to car travel, the GCL will help reduce traffic congestion and greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to a cleaner environment. The line is also anticipated to spur economic growth along its route, attracting new businesses and encouraging transit-oriented development.


In addition, the GCL is expected to create numerous jobs in the region, both during the construction phase and through the operation and maintenance of the line. This influx of employment opportunities will benefit local communities, providing a boost to the economy and enhancing the quality of life for residents.

With continued commitment and collaboration, the Glassboro-Camden Line will soon be a vital part of South Jersey’s transportation network, enhancing the quality of life for residents and visitors alike.
