3 Camden organizations pledge $30M to create ‘one-of-a-kind’ cancer center

Three Camden-based organizations have formed a “historic partnership” to further cancer research in South Jersey with the hopes of improving care worldwide.

With an initial joint pledge of $30 million over several years, the Coriell Institute for Medical Research, Cooper University Health Care and Cooper Medical School of Rowan University launched the Camden Cancer Research Center, the organizations announced July 10. The new cancer center which will be housed at the Coriell Institute will include scientists from all three organizations. It will encompass all of Coriell’s cancer research efforts, including eight scientists responsible for $5 million in annual federal research funding, the institutions said. The center will connect scientists conducting basic cancer research with clinical care, with the hopes of translating the findings into new treatments and improved care. The research center will also launch new facilities and technology for research, including a new biobank that will store and distribute biological samples to scientists in the CCRC and other cancer researchers.
