Cape breaks ground on expansion of tech center at airport

Future jobs for Cape May County residents were top of mind Tuesday as county, local and state officials broke ground on a new building at the Cape May County Airport.

The building may take about a year to compete, at a cost of $6.35 million, county Commissioner Director Len Desiderio said, helped by nearly $3 million from the U.S. Economic Development Administration. “Without this significant funding, we may not be standing here today,” Desiderio told a small crowd gathered in the windy spring sunshine in a parking area in front of the building site, currently a cleared dirt area where a podium had been placed by a line of shovels for the ceremony.

The new building is a continuation of the county’s tech village next to the site planned for the new building. The structures have been designed to resemble hangars, with three sections. The new building will be smaller, with two sections instead of three, and a garden between the structures, Commissioner Will Morey said after the event. He described it as part of an overall effort to unify the look at the airport.
