New Bridgeton elementary school in state proposal for construction

A new elementary school in Bridgeton is one of 10 projects announced Tuesday by Gov. Chris Christie as part of the revamping of the Schools Development Authority,or SDA which oversees construction in the state’s poorest school districts.

The 10 projects for 2011, estimated to cost $584 million, are part of the revamping of the SDA that includes a prioritized annual Capital Program rather than just the list of 52 approved projects. A press release from the governor’s office said that all recommendations will be presented to the SDA Board of Directors in the coming weeks. The release said $100 million would also be allocated for additional emergent projects.

Among the recommendations announced are an annual selection of projects to be built; a plan to standardize school projects and allow the same design to be used on multiple projects for an anticipated savings up almost $4 million per project; and a statewide Prioritization Plan to be reviewed annual to assure that only those projects most needed and most efficient would proceed.

Nicole Schoener, Business Administrator for the Bridgeton school district, said they are very excited to be among the first 10 projects approved under the new plan.
