President Barack Obama has approved federal aid for local governments in the 13 New Jersey counties hardest hit by the Dec. 26-27 snow storm.

The disaster declaration covers Bergen, Burlington, Cape May, Essex, Hudson, Mercer, Middlesex, Monmouth, Morris, Ocean, Passaic, Somerset and Union counties. The state also will be eligible for aid under the declaration announced today.

Some of the affected areas received more than 2 feet of snow.

The declaration frees up emergency federal funding to reimburse costs associated with cleanup and repair work.
