Westville looks to upgrade municipal offices

Citing outdated building fixtures and coding issues, officials have decided to update and expand the municipal building that currently houses the council chambers, courtroom and police department.

Previously, council members considered moving into another facility, but ultimately decided on a renovation of the building and possible move of the police station.

Architect Kimberly L. Medefindt of Oaklyn, the design professional that has been hired to prepare the specifications for the renovation, attended this week’s council meeting to solicit input from council members.

“The building is a nightmare; it’s antiquated,” said Councilman Charles Murtaugh of the current building conditions.

Murtaugh also commented on the building’s flat roof and said he wished it were more “aesthetically pleasing.”

Other issues include bringing the building’s heating and air conditioning systems up to date and resolving safety and accessibility issues.

“Our major goal is getting a larger courtroom and council chambers and a more efficient building, more or less,” said Murtaugh.
