$25M airport expansion begins to take flight in A.C.

A $25 million expansion of Atlantic City International Airport has begun, starting an 18-month construction project designed to attract more flights and open the airport to more international fliers.

The 75,000-square-foot expansion will add:

Three more passenger boarding bridges.

More room for planes to park, including overnight for early morning flights.

An expanded baggage claim area and additional baggage belt.

A federal inspection station for processing international flights.

Expanding the airport is seen as a way to draw airlines from other markets — such as Philadelphia — to the Egg Harbor Township facility, said Sharon Gordon, spokeswoman for the South Jersey Transportation Authority, which runs the airport.

“Having this new facility, we’ll be able to offer that concept (of low fares) to airlines,” she said.
