Burlington County to spend $6.5M to buy, renovate building for new alternative school

Officials are citing an increase in enrollment at the Burlington County Alternative School as the driving factor behind a plan to spend $6.5 million to buy and renovate a building on the campus of Rowan College at Burlington County in Mount Laurel to house the program.

With student enrollment on the rise and the school “bursting at the seams,” the district is likely to start wait-listing future student applicants looking to enter the program unless the district finds a solution, said Christopher Manno, superintendent of the Burlington County Special Services School District.

At a public meeting Wednesday night, the Burlington County Board of Freeholders approved the first reading for the bond issuance to buy and renovate the building at 1020 Briggs Road, which is about a tenth of a mile from the 9,300-square-foot building that houses the school on the college campus. A public hearing will be held March 23.
