Middle Township voters approve both school construction projects

Middle Township voters appear to have easily approved two bond referenda Tuesday for renovations and upgrades to local schools.

With 17 of 18 districts reporting at 10 p.m., the first proposal was approved by about 74 percent of voters by a vote of 977 to 349. The second question was approved by almost 60 percent of voters by a vote of 779 to 593.

The first proposal asks to bond $21.3 million for work on elementary schools 1 and 2, and the middle and high schools.

The project will not raise property taxes, because the district has almost finished paying off another bond. The new bond funds will replace those that are being paid off.

The district will get almost $2.3 million in state aid for the work.

Voter also approved a second question that includes funding another $3.3 million for two new athletic fields, a playground, concession, storage and restroom building, and parking.

The second proposal will raise taxes about $1.70 per month for a house assessed at the township average of $241,000.
