N. J. affordable-housing bill gets final OK

A year after it was introduced, a bill that would lower the obligation of New Jersey towns to provide affordable housing and eliminate a 2.5 percent fee on commercial developers to pay for it gained final legislative approval Monday.

The measure heads to Gov. Christie’s desk, along with legislation to speed up permit approvals for builders, exempt most seniors’ retirement pay from income taxes, and provide up to $45 million in tax credits to the film-production industry.

State lawmakers crammed through about three dozen bills in a two-day marathon that started Thursday and resumed Monday, repeatedly voting on proposals of major consequence with little debate.
