Stockton will renovate police building

With a proposed new Atlantic County dispatch center on hold, Stockton University will move forward with almost $1 million in renovations to its existing police department building.

Stockton had planned to relocate its police department to a new building shared with a centralized Atlantic County dispatch center. The university had agreed to contribute 10 acres of university-owned land on Pomona Road, and $4.8 million of the total cost. The Board of Trustees approved the joint project in December, 2013.

Stockton associate vice president for facilities and construction Donald Hudson told the trustees at Wednesday’s meeting that the $980,000 project for the existing police building on campus would include new and expanded restrooms and locker rooms, and the holding cell. He said some renovations addressed federal Title IX equal access issues.

Hudson said Thursday that the renovation work was planned while the county center was still in discussion and also included new processing rooms, armory, evidence storage and renovations to the squad room.
