’The city is a phoenix’: New Rutgers-Camden chancellor looks to be an anchor for growth

Rutgers University-Camden’s new chancellor firmly believes the state university is the anchor institution of South Jersey.

Antonio Tillis joined Rutgers-Camden on July 1, coming from the University of Houston to lead one of Greater Philadelphia’s largest schools. He is now working to build partnerships with South Jersey’s business community and local community colleges to educate more students for the future needs of the workforce.

Camden’s economic growth is one of the things that drew Tillis to the university. Rutgers-Camden’s position as an anchor institution means that it has a large part to play in the city’s progress, and Mayor Victor Carstarphen and local business leaders have a vision for spurring growth, he said.

”Camden is on the rise,” Tillis said. “The city is a phoenix.”
